Can Dynamics GP handle a multi million dollar distribution business?

Stanley Black and Decker is a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial tools and household hardware as well as providing security products and locks. A few years ago, they made the decision to spin off their office products division under the new name of Amax Systems. Of course, they wanted the process to go smoothly without any disruption to their business processes. They hoped to stop the Stanly Black and Decker systems on a Friday and be up and running as the new AMAX Systems on the following Monday morning, processing and shipping orders without interruption. In addition, setting up the new company involved appointing a new CFO, setting up two new distribution complexes and renegotiating contracts with some of their largest clients. A tall order and some doubted it could be done quickly.

The spin off, AMAX Systems, needed an ERP system that could be set up quickly and could handle the volume and complexity of their process without the downtime and delays necessitated by extensive customization. AMAX opted for Microsoft Dynamics GP with Vsync for EDI and SalesPad for their sales and customer service teams. Because of the scope of the job and the tight timeframe for implementation, they needed a Microsoft partner who was as committed to their goal as they were and had the necessary skills and experience. They chose CAL Business Solutions, a Connecticut Microsoft Dynamics GP partner.

According to Gary Blanchette AMEX’s vice president: “We looked at several partners. Some had all the buzzwords and platitudes. But when speaking with CAL one of the things we thought is that these were really “nuts and bolts” guys. They were not scared of the timeline. They were very organized in their structure and they had the resources to support the gaps in our team to make the project work and get it done on time.  We wanted people who were implementers, we didn’t need business consultants.  We know how to operate this business; we needed someone to implement the systems and make sure it worked. We explained to CAL how we wanted it to work and they made it happen. The competency of our Dynamics partner was key.”

CAL implemented the entire Dynamics GP system in just twelve weeks. Go live happened quickly, just as AMAX had hoped. CAL achieved their goal of delivering on time and AMAX achieved their goal of a seamless business transfer.

“CAL had a great project plan. The data migration was flawless. The whole thing went smoothly and was incredibly structured. Everything worked Monday morning and appeared seamless to the customer. It truly went off without a glitch,” says Blanchette.

Gary Banchette talked about the key benefits they have seen with their new Microsoft Dynamics GP solution.:

  • Increased efficiency: ‘We have efficiency across the entire organization; we function more efficiently than we ever have before. Because the system is easy to learn and navigate, it is easy to get the information you need in a very timely manner. Customer service processes orders more efficiently than even before. This efficiency equates to getting more done with fewer people so we can move resources to areas that drive revenue growth, like new product development.   We wanted a system to truly manage the financial side of the business and have it be robust enough that we can trust it; now our efforts can be focused on growth and driving the business.’
  • Real Time Reporting: ‘Thanks to Dynamics GP we know the true value and cost of inventory. We trust the system and the data that is in there. We have ability to access trustworthy data.’
  • Remote Access: ‘Because we are operating our solution in the Cloud, it is accessible from anywhere in the world and our teams can work remotely with far greater efficiency. Our sales reps travel nationally and we have satellite workers and a parent company in Taiwan. They can all access the system easily to check inventory in stock or check on returns. This makes it easier for our parent company to plan production.’
  • Reliability: ‘We can rely on the system to be up and running. Giving us accurate info every day is critical. Our company cannot afford downtime. It has been 2 years since we flipped the switch and we have had no downtime.’
